Robotic Surgery

The field of laparoscopic surgery has taken a huge step forward with newer and significantly better technology known as the da Vinci Surgical System. Use of this laparoscopic robotic system now allows surgeons to perform many complex surgeries previously not eligible for the use of the laparoscopic instruments. Whereas the previously used laparoscopic instruments used by urological surgeons were rigid, those of the da Vinci Surgical System are flexible allowing “wrist- and finger-like” movements handling the instruments. This new system also provides the surgeon with three-dimensional viewing inside the surgical area allowing for true depth perception. It is a minimally invasive approach, using the latest in surgical and robotics technologies, and is ideal for both complex and delicate urologic surgeries. This includes prostatectomy, where the target site is not only tightly confined but also surrounded by nerves affecting urinary control and sexual function. da Vinci Surgery offers patients facing urologic surgery many potential benefits over traditional open surgery, including:

  • Significantly less pain
  • Less blood loss
  • Fewer complications
  • Shorter hospital stay
  • Faster return to normal daily activities
